Services in Mumbai government hospitals were hit badly on Tuesday after around 80,000 employees of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) staff, owing allegiance to the Municipal Mazdoor Union led by NCP leader Sharad Rao, went on an indefinite strike on Monday night demanding salaries on the lines of the sixth pay commission.
As the first and biggest impact, the strike severely affected government hospitals in the city. Patients were left in the lurch with striking employees refusing to extend a helping hand.
Water supply and garbage disposal across the city was also affected due to the strike.
Civic employees, mostly of class IV, who joined the strike, included those involved in jobs such as garbage collection, dousing fires, monitoring water supply and working in civic hospitals. However, Shiv Sena's Municipal Karmachari Kamgar Sena, led by Baba Kadam, was not participating in the agitation.
Rao blamed municipal commissioner Subodh Kumar for instigating the strike and said he would negotiate only with Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and executive president of Shiv Sena Uddhav Thackeray. He said Kumar had reneged on the pay revision promised on August 9.
The strike was called despite an industrial court order. The BMC said that it would take action against the striking employees. It has put in place a contingency plan. Earlier, talks between the workers' union and the BMC failed to make any headway.
