Rahul Gandhi visits quake-hit Sikkim














New Delhi:  Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi is visiting quake-hit Sikkim today to meet victims and take stock of rescue and relief efforts. Mr Gandhi arrived at Gangtok at around 10:30 am. 

A party leader said Mr Gandhi may also undertake an aerial survey of the quake-affected areas of Sikkim en route to Meghalaya, where he will address a meeting of the Youth Congress activists.

The party leader said Mr Gandhi will meet workers and officials to get a first-hand account of the extent of damage in Sunday's earthquake. More than 80 people have been killed in the quake.

Mr Gandhi stopped over at Gangtok on his way to Ampati in the West Garo Hills of Meghalaya. His visit to Meghalaya is part of his meetings across the country to increase the membership of the Youth Congress and encourage youth to join politics. Mr Gandhi is the party's General Secretary who is in charge of the Youth Congress.

Meghalaya is scheduled to go to the Assembly polls in 2013. Ampati is the Assembly constituency of Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma.
