Mayawati now seeks OBC status for Jats

After demanding reservation for minorities and upper caste poor, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati on Monday wrote to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh urging him to include Jat community in other backward castes (OBC) category.

In a fresh letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the chief minister argued that the Jats were primarily farmers who have been hit by declining agricultural activities.

The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) referred to Jats in Rajasthan who were identified as OBC and sought a similar status for those in Uttar Pradesh.

On Sunday, Mayawati had written a letter to the prime minister demanding introduction of quota for the poor among upper castes. She had written a similar letter to the prime minister on September 17 also asking for constitutional amendment to provide quota to minorities, especially Muslims.

The Opposition in the state has accused the Mayawati government of resorting to the quota route ahead of next year's assembly polls.
