New York—Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar held meetings with the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, Russian, Iranian and other foreign ministers at the UN Headquarter, here on Tuesday.
While talking to the UN Secretary General (UNSG), the
Foreign Minister highlighted the devastation caused by the current floods in the Sindh province and welcomed the launch of UN flash appeal amounting $ 357 million for relief operations in the affected areas. She said that the Government of Pakistan had mobilized all national resources for the rescue and relief of affected population. However, the magnitude of devastation was beyond our resources.
The Foreign Minister briefed the UN Secretary General also about Pakistan’s contribution in the ongoing fight against terrorism. She said that the Government and people of Pakistan were determined to eradicate the monster of terrorism from their country, region and the world at large.
The Foreign Minister also discussed the regional situation with the Secretary General and expressed Pakistan’s firm resolve to work with regional countries for peace and stability in the entire region.
Ms Hina Rabbani Khar on Tuesday held a bilateral meeting with her Russian counterpart Mr. Sergei Lavrov during which the two sides expressed satisfaction over the existing bilateral ties between the two countries. The two Foreign Ministers discussed prospects of enhancing economic cooperation between the two countries particularly in the sectors of metallurgy, mining, energy, transport and civil aviation. Issues related to regional peace and security, including the situation in Afghanistan, also came under discussion. The two Foreign Ministers expressed their firm resolve to work together for stability and prosperity of the region. On the occasion the Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation also extended invitation to the Foreign Minister of Pakistan to visit Russia.
Hina Rabbani Khar during meeting with the Foreign Minister of Syria, Mr. Walid Al-Moualem expressed satisfaction at the strong historical, cultural and religious ties between the two countries and expressed their firm resolve to further strengthen these relations. The two sides also discussed the situation in the Middle East region. The Foreign Minister of Pakistan emphasized that peace and stability in Syria was crucial for the peace and stability of the whole region and reaffirmed Pakistan’s strong and unwavering commitment to the sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity of Syria.
Foreign Minister also expressed hope that the Syrian Government would be able to overcome the current crisis in line with the aspirations of the Syrian people.
In meeting with her Iranian counterpart Mr. Aliakbar Salehi she expressed gratitude for the generous support of Iran for the victims of recent floods in Pakistan and welcomed the visit of the Iranian Interior Minister Mustafa Najjar to Pakistan to deliver the first consignment of relief assistance.
She also expressed Pakistan’s commitment for the completion of the Pakistan-Iran gas pipeline project by stipulated deadline of December 2014 and informed her counterpart that progress on the project was well ahead of time.
