Vigilance probe ordered into Old Delhi building collapse

NEW DELHI: Facing allegations of allowing illegal construction in Old Delhi, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) on Wednesday ordered a vigilance inquiry into the building collapse incident to ascertain whether the owner had connived with civic body officials in construction activities.

MCD commissioner KS Mehra asked the director of vigilance to conduct an inquiry into the tragic incident of house collapse in Chandni Mahal on Tuesday.

The inquiry will be in addition to the probe being conducted by Krishna Kumar, deputy commissioner (city zone).

"Now, taking into consideration the magnitude of the issue, Mehra has entrusted the work of inquiry to the director of vigilance. He has also directed him to inquire into the role of builder and MCD officials.

"Action will be taken against defaulting persons or the officials," MCD spokesperson Deep Mathur said.

Seven persons, including four women and a minor boy, were killed and 22 injured when two adjacent buildings collapsed.

Owner Anil was carrying out some construction in his building which collapsed due to digging work. The collapse of his building led to the razing of an adjacent building too.

A senior MCD official, meanwhile, sought to to put the ball in police's court saying it had informed them about "dangerous" digging activity being carried out by the owner a fortnight ago.

A senior MCD official said the civic body has informed police that the owner of one of the buildings, which collapsed in Old Delhi's Chandni Mahal, was carrying out digging activities for construction during night time.

"It was for the police to take action. The Commissioner in writing had informed them that digging was being done during darkness. The owner did not do anything during daytime," the official said.
