IT bellwether Infosys Technologies appears to be quietly setting its house in order to tackle the visa row. According to an Economics Times report, the IT major has hired Vasudev Nayak, the former head of the overseas operations cell at Wipro, in place of Eshan Joshi, an associate vice-president at Infosys' human resources division and head of its immigration department.
It may be recalled Infosys is facing two legal suits in the US. Jack Palmer who has accused the company of large scale visa fraud in the US is not ready for an out of court settlement. He wants the case to go to court and see it to the end. Infosys maintains that his claims are false and exaggerated.
Since the H1B visa issue is still under investigation, the company's human resource department declined to comment but admitted that the tech meltdown in the aftermath of global recession had led to a substantial slump in demand for US visas under various categories.
In the SEC filing, on May 23, the company had agreed that any action by the US government against it would seriously affect its business in the North America market, which accounts for about 60 per cent of its export revenue.
Now with such serious allegations, the company is trying its best to improve its battered image. In a interview to Yahoo! India Finance in July, V Balakrishnan, CFO said that the only way to tackle the issue was to hire more locals. But now it looks like the company is only making Joshi a scapegoat of the fiasco.
One must note that other biggies like Wipro Technologies, Cognizant Technologies have also been accused of misusing H1B and B1 visas.
