Mayawati vs Assange: The story so far

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati lashed out at WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, saying he is either insane or being used as a tool of her opponents for releasing US Embassy cables that describe her as megalomaniac and corrupt.

'The owner of Wikileaks should be sent to a mental asylum for what the kind of baseless allegations his organisation had been making against me,' Mayawati said.

The cables that portray her as a dictator, she said, were a ploy by vested interests to malign her image and that of her party.

Wikileaks founder Assange mad: Mayawati

Uttar Pradesh chief minister and BSP president Mayawati on Tuesday lashed out at Wikileaks and its owner Julian Assange for publishing baseless information about her.

An October 2008 cable called Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati, a powerful leader of the nation's bottom caste untouchables, a 'virtual paranoid dictator' who once sent a private jet to Mumbai to pick up a new pair of sandals.

"When she needed new sandals, a jet flew empty to Mumbai to retrieve her preferred brand," according to a cable dated Oct. 23, 2008. "She constructed a private road from her residence to her office, which is cleaned immediately after her multiple vehicle convoy reaches its destination."

BJP, Congress slam Mayawati

BJP and Congress on Tuesday lashed out at Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati and her key aides, after a leaked Wikileaks cable exposed their duplicity over graft and the Indo-US nuclear deal.

In condemning the cables, Mayawati seemed unaware they were written by US diplomats, instead assigning the blame for them directly to Assange, as well as to her rivals in the Bharatiya Janata Party, one of several parties challenging her rule in elections next year.

Accusing Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati of institutionalising corruption in the state, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi Monday said a cable leaked by WikiLeaks only 'exposes the corrupt face and dual standards' of her regime.

Satish Chandra Mishra rubbishes Wikileaks report

Slamming Wikileaks for its recent expose about the misuse of power by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati, BSP general secretary and Rajya Sabha MP Satish Chandra Mishra on Tuesday said the ...

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) general secretary Satish Chandra Misra denied a US diplomatic cable on whistleblower website WikiLeaks that he had called Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati corrupt.

The Rajya Sabha MP said he would sue the newspaper that had published the cable and serve a 'legal notice to Wikileaks for making this baseless allegation against me when fact remains that I did not meet any foreign delegate between May 2007 and December 2007'.

'Well, Mayawatiji took oath as the chief minister on May 13, 2007, and the WikiLeaks cable is purported to have been sent barely two weeks after that... can you imagine anyone in my position making that kind of a statement within days of the formation of the government?' Misra asked.
