CHENNAI: Levelling charges of land grab against DMK leader M Karunanidhi, AIADMK’s RK Nagar MLA Vetrivel said in the State Assembly that of late, many DMK leaders had been arrested on land grab charges and this had not happened all of a sudden but was an evolution since 1967.
In 1967, Karunanidhi had got 780 sq ft of land by paying `3,250 to Chennai Corporation and after a few years, he got back the money but failed to return the land. So far, the land was in possession of Karunanidhi, Vetrivel alleged. In 2003, the Chennai Corporation adopted a resolution seeking the return of the land. But, till this moment, Karunanidhi has been having possession of the land.
Regarding OSR land in Anna Arivalayam, Vetrivel said it had been misused by the DMK for a long time. After many objections, the DMK said the space would be given for setting up a park, but in reality it had been used as a parking lot. The total extent of land was 8.75 grounds worth about `80 to `90 crore at current market rates. He said a separate entry to the park should be provided for the public since they could not enter through the DMK headquarters.
Vetrivel also charged that ex-minister K Ponmudy had encroached upon 1,230 sq ft of� land in Saidapet meant for the Triplicane Urban Cooperative Society. Ponmudy obtained a forged patta for the land in the name of his mother-in-law. Further, Devaraj, brother of� Arcot N Veeraswami, had encroached upon 1.32 acre of land in An na Nagar that costs `100 cr ore, Vetrivel claimed.
