Amar Singh ‘aide’ arrested in cash for votes probe

New Delhi Two days after being pulled up by the Supreme Court for shoddy investigations, Delhi Police on Sunday arrested Sanjeev Saxena, an aide of former Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh, for his alleged involvement in the 2008 cash-for-votes scandal.
A Parliamentary Committee report had earlier named Saxena as a suspect and asked the police to probe his role. He was presented with evidence about his role in the case.
The Crime Branch of Delhi Police called Saxena for questioning to their Chanakyapuri office, where he was placed under arrest later.
“We have arrested Saxena for various charges under Prevention of Corruption Act,” said Ashok Chand, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime).
Police had also examined the CD of a sting operation, conducted by a private news channel, in which Saxena was shown handing out bundles of notes to three BJP MPs.
The three MPs, Ashok Argal (Morena), Fagan Singh Kulaste (Mandla) and Mahavir Bhagora (Salumber), had alleged that they were offered Rs 1 crore to abstain from the 2008 trust vote. They had carried into Parliament wads of notes on July 22, 2008.
The MPs had alleged that they were offered money to abstain from voting. A seven-member Parliamentary Committee was constituted to probe the allegations. After the inquiry, the committee had asked the Crime Branch to investigate the role of three persons, including Sanjeev Saxena.
The Delhi Police received the forensic report of the CD on January 11 this year, which said the CD was not doctored.
“We made the arrest after examining the sting operation CD, and the forensic test revealed that it was genuine. The Parliamentary Committee had also given a report in which they had named Saxena as a suspect and said his role was dubious. He will be produced in a city court on Monday,” said a senior police officer.
