Tamluk, July 26: A 16-year-old who apparently got married on the sly threw herself before a train and was run over along with her husband as he tried to save her, just after the couple quarrelled over her plan to continue studies.
Arghya Dey, 20, and Mita, both Tamluk residents, had got married at a local temple two months ago despite opposition from their families.
Mita, a Class IX student, wanted to continue with her studies. But her husband and in-laws objected to her going to school, Mita’s mother Rina Das said. They had several arguments on the matter, she added.
On Sunday night, the couple had gone to Mita’s parents home. Rina said: “Though the two had several fights, that night we did not notice any animosity between the two. I told Arghya that since she was so keen to carry on with her studies, he should allow her to do so.”
Around 10.45pm, they left for Arghya’s home, around 1km away. “But it seems they had an argument on the way,” Arghya’s father Ganesh said. “Arghya came back alone around 11pm and left again in a hurry with his cycle. He said he was going to Mita’s house,” he said.
But neither returned home that night.
The families told police yesterday that couple were missing. They were told to wait before making a formal complaint.
The police told the families this morning that two bodies had been found. Family members later identified the bodies as those of the couple.
Shyamal Ray, the officer in charge of Tamluk police station, said the bodies were found next to the railway tracks between Tamluk and Shahid Matangini stations, about 1.5km from the Deys’ home.
Ganesh said: “It seems Mita ran away from Arghya following the argument. When he returned to search for her after taking his cycle, it is possible that he saw her on the tracks about to jump before a goods train. In a bid to save her, he too jumped but was killed in the process.”
