New Delhi: The water level in the Yamuna has started receding slightly today after remaining above the danger level for four days, but it is likely to go up again, as Haryana released over one lakh cusecs of water into the river.
"The river was flowing at 204.62 m at 5:30pm which is 11 cm below the danger mark of 204.83 m," a flood control department official said. The river had crossed the danger level on Wednesday.
The water level, which had gone up to 205.46 m yesterday, may rise again as over one lakh cusec of water has been released from Hathini Kund barrage in Haryana into the river.
The official said the administration was geared up to meet any flood-like situation in the low-lying areas near the river and the situation is being monitored round-the-clock.
The water level in the river had gone up following the release of over six lakh cusecs of water by Haryana into the river on Tuesday. The incessant rains in the last few days in the city have also contributed to the increase in the water level.
Authorities in East Delhi had evacuated people from certain low lying areas in the last few days to safer places. Officials said tents have been put up at Garhi Mandu, Badarpur Khadar, ISBT bridge, Shastri Park, Old Yamuna bridge, Chilla Gaon, Mayur Vihar, Shakarpur, Shamshan Ghat, Geeta Colony, Jamuna Bazar and Jagatpur to provide shelter to affected people in case of a flood-like situation.
The local administration is also making public announcements in flood-prone areas, requesting people to move away from low lying areas.
Last year, several areas were flooded in the city following incessant rains, as well as release of huge quantity of water into Yamuna by neighbouring Haryana. The water level in Yamuna had touched 207.06 m on September 22, which was 2.23 m above the danger mark. The water level in Yamuna had touched 207.49 metres then, flooding vast areas of east Delhi.
Officials said food, drinking water and medical facilities were being arranged for people in the low lying areas in the event of any flood affecting them.
Fifty six boats have been kept ready for evacuation of people while personnel from National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are also being kept ready for any kind of eventualities, they said
