New Delhi: In the wake of reports about sewage getting mixed with water being supplied by the Delhi Jal Board (DJB), the civic body today admitted to water contamination in certain areas and sought "dedicated utility corridors" to deal with the problem.
"Yes, there's contamination in the water being supplied by Delhi Jal Board.... We do not deny this fact and to deal with this problem, the city needs dedicated utility corridors," Delhi Jal Board CEO Ramesh Negi said.
The admission by Negi came following reports that DJB water pipelines had micro cracks and were being contaminated by sewage as the lines cross each other.
However the DJB CEO asked people not to panic and said any knee jerk reaction would only benefit the private mineral water selling companies.
"In fact, I myself drink the Delhi Jal Board water which clearly shows, there's no need to worry," Negi said addressing a press conference.
According to a report, a joint inspection by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi and DJB found micro cracks in 67 major water pipelines in 200 areas surveyed by them.
"What can we do? Delhi Jal Board tackles a huge network of over 14,000 km of pipelines, and 700 km of water mains and rest peripheral lines. There're no dedicated utility corridors in Delhi on the pattern of other international cities where there's separate corridor each for electricity lines, water lines, and sewer lines," Negi said.
