New Delhi: A teenage IIT-Delhi student allegedly committed suicide inside a room of the campus on Thursday afternoon with police initiating a probe to ascertain the reason for him taking such an extreme step.
Dinesh Ahlawat (18), a first-year Chemical Engineering student who hailed from Haryana's Rohtak, was found hanging by his friends in Zanskar Hostel in the campus at around 5:30 pm, a senior police official said. It is believed that the incident occurred between 2 pm and 5 pm.
"His (Ahlawat) friends broke the ventilator to enter his room as he did not respond to their knocking of the door. They found him hanging and entered the room after which police was informed," the official said. No suicide note was recovered and police is investigating the reason why the student took the extreme step.
"There is no evidence to suggest that there was foul play in the incident. We are investigating. It appears to be a case of suicide," the official said. The body has been sent to AIIMS for postmortem and the family has been informed. A case has been registered.
