Mangalore, Aug 5: Vivek Express, an exhibition train depicting the life and principles of Swami Vivekananda chugged into Mangalore Central Railway station on Friday August 5.
The train will be stationed here for three days from August 5 to Sunday August 7. The train exhibition is open to public between 10 am and 6 pm, free of cost.
On Friday morning a short programme was held at the station during which a floral tribute was paid to Swami Vivekananda.
The train exhibits a large collection of pictures and gives details of historical moments from Swami Vivekananda's life. Information on the landmark World Parliament of Religions of 1893, where he delivered his famous speech that had the American audience rise up in applause, is also exhibited.
Inaugurating the exhibition S K Raina, divisional railway manager, Palakkad, said that the train had so far covered 79 railway stations of eight states. In all, 240 stations are expected to be covered nationwide and so far six lac people had visited the exhibition.
Commenting on the Netravathi new railway bridge here, he said that it will be completed by the end of this year. Ruling out the claim made by Mangalore City Corporation that money had been kept aside for the construction of the underpass at Jeppu, he said that once the money was released, the construction work would immediately be undertaken.
Vice-chanceller of Mangalore University T C Sivasankara Murthy said that the exhibition enabled fostering of national integrity and patriotism. India's younger generation has been overtaking its counterpart in China and the USA, which had been a country of young people 50 years ago, he said, and added, "Swami Vivekananda's life has always been an inspiration for the youth."
Inspector general of police Alok Mohan, president Ramakrishna Math Swami Jitakamanandaji, Dr Prabhakar Bhat Kalladka among others were present.
