In pictures: Clashes in Old City


Violent clashes broke out  between demonstrators and government forces in Old City this afternoon against the curbs on the Hurriyat Conference (M) Chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq by the state authorities. Reports said soon after the Friday congregation got over at the historic Jamia Masjid, supporters of the Mirwaiz led by Imam Hai tried to march towards thye Nowhatta chowk, but, the forces' deploiyment stopped them trigerring off clashes that lasted for many hours.

Scores of youth after offering congregational Friday prayers at the historic Jamia Masjid, Nowhatta took out a rally to protest the curbs on the Chief Cleric and pro-freedom leader, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq by the state authorities.
Chanting pro-freedom, pro-Islam and Pro-Mirwaiz slogans, the protesters tried to march through the streets of the Old City.
However, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Police, deployed in advance, resorted to cane charge and fired numerous tear gas shells to break up the demonstrations.
Angry protesters hurled stones on the forces triggering fierce clashes. Clashes were going on in Hawal when reports last came in.
