As the assembly election in Uttar Pradesh draws closer, disgruntled elements in all parties are switching loyalties. Six MLAs of theSamajwadi Party (SP) on Friday joined the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP).
They were Sarvesh Singh from Sagdi in Azamgarh, Ashok Singh Chandel from Hamirpur, Sandeep Agrawal from Moradabad, Surendra Singh Lodh from Hadha in Unnao, Suraj Singh Shakya from Kanshiram Nagar in Etah and Sultan Beg from Kawar in Bareilly.
A day before, Sandhya Kateria, SP legislator from the Kishani segment of party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav's parliamentary constituency, had deserted him to join the BSP. These MLAs had sided with Amar Singh when he was suspended by Mulayam on the charge of indiscipline. But Amar didn't give them much importance when he formed his Rashtriya Lok Manch.
Although the SP had not removed them from the party, it was apparent that they wouldn't be given tickets in the assembly election.
This appears only the beginning as more turncoats would be looking for greener pastures before the state polls.
Three BSP MLAs had defected to the SP last week when denied ticket by their party. They were Satish Sharma from Mallawan, Farid Mehfooz Kidwai from Masauli and Sher Bahadur Singh from Jajalpur. The SP has promised ticket to all the three MLAs.
State BSP chief S. P. Maurya, claimed many more SP leaders were keen to join his party. "We will announce their names soon," he said.
SP leader Shivpal Singh Yadav, however, said: "Only those legislators of our party have joined the BSP whom we had sidelined because of their anti-party activities. But many BSP MLAs are in touch with us and want to desert Mayawati."
