Asia's one of the biggest dairies, Dudhsagar, an affiliate of GCMMF that markets its products under the brand name of 'Amul', was engulfed in fire today, killing at least five persons and injuring 22 others.
"Five persons have died, while 22 were injured in a fire that broke out at Dudhsagar Dairy," Mehsana District Collector Rajkumar Beniwal told media.
"Fire broke out in the dairy after a leakage in one of the gas pipelines passing from a cold storage tank in the plant, which is located close to the milk powder manufacturing department of the dairy," another official said.
"Later, a blast in the boiler was also reported," he said.
Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) has 13 dairy member unions. Dudhsagar Dairy is one of them and it has one of the biggest dairy plants in Asia.
Eleven fire tenders were pressed into service to control the fire, in which, a huge cold storage building of the dairy collapsed.
"Fire is under control now," Beniwal said.
The six workers, who died in the inferno, have been identified as Kanti Chuadhary, Samir Patel, Kaushik Chaudhary, Alpesh Mistry and Dinesh Solanki, officials said.
The toll in the incident could increase, as work to remove the debris is still on, official sources said, adding that they have asked for big cranes from Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, so that the work of removal of debris could be expedited.
Officials have not ruled out the possibility of more people trapped under the debris of the building.
"Out of the 22 injured, five are serious and four have been shifted to civil hospital of Ahmedabad, while one has been shifted to Apollo hospital," officials said adding, "Other injured have been admitted to city civil hospital and Lions hospital here."
