Storm over unmarked graves in J&K Assembly

Jammu:  The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly witnessed a walkout by MLAs of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) over the issue of unmarked graves.

Opposition party PDP demanded suspension of the question-hour and asked for a debate on unmarked-graves instead.

"Thousands are looking for their near and dear ones. The state government should conduct DNA profiling of bodies buried in unmarked graves," said PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti.

The ruling National Conference said they had already moved a resolution on the issue that was meant to be debated later in the day as part of the business of the House.

The Jammu and Kashmir Human Rights Commission had recommended the formation of an independent and structured body to look into all aspects of unmarked graves in the state.

Hearing a case after its police investigation wing submitted a report establishing the presence of over 2000 unmarked graves in north Kashmir, the commission asked the state government to conduct DNA profiling of bodies buried in unmarked graves and match them with those people whose relatives have been disappeared over the last 20 years.

The Commission also asked the government to probe the presence of over 3000 unmarked graves in the Poonch and Rajouri regions.
