DMK meeting: Decision on alliance with Congress today

Coimbatore:  On the second day of the DMK meeting in Coimbatore, the party is expected to chalk out its future in the UPA government at the Centre. Party top brass will decide today on the crucial question of continuing alliance with the Congress and sending replacements for A Raja and Dayanidhi Maran.

The two parties have been together for seven years, but share a strained relationship since the 2G scam led to Karunanidhi's daughter Kanimozhi and party leader A Raja being arrested and sent to jail. Karunanidhi's grand-nephew, Dayanidhi Maran, was also forced to quit the union Cabinet over his alleged role the scam.

The other big issue to dominate the meeting today will be succession for the party's leadership. After a four hour long executive committee meeting yesterday, sources say supporters of party patriarch Karunanidhi's younger son, MK Stalin, demanded his elevation to a new post - that of working president which would make Stalin No. 2 in the party. But those in his brother Alagiri's camp argued that this is not the right time to discuss that issue.

Yesterday, as the DMK leaders discussed the party's rout in the Assembly polls, party chief M Karunanidhi put up a brave face and told his partymen that "all of us are equally to blame" (for the poll debacle). He also asserted that the DMK was a fortress that had withstood even the Emergency.

"This setback is not worse than Emergency," Karunanidhi, whose government was dismissed and his son Stalin put in prison during that period, said.

The DMK patriarch sounded confident that the party would win the next elections.
