Tirunelveli (Tamil Nadu): An unemployed man has been arrested in Tirunelveli for allegedly selling his one-month old daughter to a Mumbai-based businessman for Rs. 40,000 to cover expenses of his family.
J Syed Yousuff was arrested on Friday when his wife informed the Village Administrative Officer (VAO) of the step, who lodged a complaint, police said.
Yousuff was desperate to find resources for meeting the day-to-day expenses of his five-member family after he recently lost his job in a tea shop due to a drunken brawl with the owner, they said.
He had convinced his wife Fathima to sell their third girl child, born about a month ago, saying there was no other way they could manage costs, they said, adding that the baby was exchanged for money on July 17.
The mother told the VAO about the infant's 'sale' following a quarrel on Youssuf spending the money on liquor, they said.
