Stalin was never arrested or detained, say police

Tiruvarur:  Police in Tamil Nadu said that M K Stalin, son of DMK chief M Karunanidhi, was never arrested or detained. They add that Mr Stalin was merely moved as he was obstructing traffic.

Earlier reports said that Mr Stalin was detained by police at Tiruvarur. The DMK leader was trying to stage a protest, when police attempted to arrest DMK's Tiruvarur secretary Kalaivanan.

The police had been looking for the DMK functionary in connection with the death of a school student in a road accident in Tiruvarur on Friday.

Mr Stalin had reportedly demanded an arrest warrant or FIR copy before the arrest, and it was then that he was taken into detention.

He, however, was unfazed by the detention, and said: "The police only blocked us. We did not obstruct traffic; we will face this. This is an attempt to scuttle our scheduled protest against the AIADMK government on August 1.

Following reports of Mr Stalin's detention, hundreds of DMK cadres have been courting arrest across the state.
