18 cm long appendix removed

VADODARA: Doctors of city-based government-run SSG Hospital have registered a record by removing longest appendix ever in the country. A team of doctors recently operated upon a 50-year-old patient Shakuben Harijan and removed an 18 centimetre long appendix from her body.

Now, the doctors have decided to publish a paper of this case in the Indian Journal of Surgery as the longest appendix ever found in the country. "The earlier recorded longest appendix removed from a patient in the country was 17.5 cm long while globally the longest appendix removed is measured at 26 cm," says Dr Adeesh Jain, adding that the patient from Bejithiya village of Tilakwada had approached the hospital complaining of abdominal pain with distension.

"She was also complaining of continuous vomiting. After her examination and ultra sound of abdomen, it was examined that the patient had infection of appendix. Following this an emergency surgery was done," adds Jain, who along surgeons Dr Ritesh Patel and Dr Rajnikant Parmar operated upon the patient under the guidance of Dr A K Saxena. The patient was not aware that she had infection of appendix. When the doctors operated upon her they found multiple small nodules all over the abdomen involving all the parts of the intestine large inflamed appendix.

Appendicectomy was done and biopsy was taken from the nodules present all over the abdomen. "Post operation the patient recovery was very good and she was discharged," adds Jain.

The largest appendix removed, recorded in the Guinness World Records, measured 26 cm. It was removed from a 72-year-old patient Safranco August from Croatia during an autopsy at the Ljudevit Jurak University department of pathology, Zagreb at Croatia in August 2006.
