Lucknow: A Bahujan Samaj Party (BJP) legislator was booked on Saturday, along with three members of his family for knocking down a Muslim cleric with his car in Uttar Pradesh, police said.
Ali Khan's car hit the cleric in Kakraula area of Badaun district on Friday night, triggering violent protests by the locals.
Locals alleged that at the behest of Khan, his gunner fired shots in the air, when they tried to approach the legislator to take the injured cleric to hospital.
Demanding the arrest of Khan, who represents Usehat cosntituency in Badaun, 250 km from Lucknow, locals damaged vehicles, including some belonging to the district police.
"We have registered a case against the legislator, his son and two brothers under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including for provoking breach of peace and criminal intimidation," said a police official requesting anonymity.
Police said the injured cleric was out of danger.
