Madurai: Six people died and many others sustained injuries when the police opened fire after being attacked by a mob in Tamil Nadu's Ramanathapuram district. While five people died after the firing yesterday, one of the injured succumbed to his injuries today.
Bodies of victims will be handed over to families today after post-mortem.
Problem began on Sunday when police arrested John Pandian, a Dalit leader, in a bid to prevent him from attending the birth anniversary of a late leader. Soon after the arrest, a mob attacked the police at Paramakudi, injuring several policemen including a Deputy Commissioner of Police.
A few police vehicles were also torched. Police say they had no option but to open fire.
Section 144 has been imposed in the district to prevent any untoward incident.
Protest also spread to adjoining district. Two people were injured in police firing in Madurai.
Chief Minister Jayalalithaa has condemned the violence and has announced a compensation of Rs 1 lakh to the kin of those killed. Appealing for peace she said the police opened fire in self-defence and to protect public property.
"Violence for political gain has to be condemned. I appeal to not indulge in violence. The police opened fire in self-defence and to save public property," she said.
