Darshan case: Why is a woman paying the price?

Bangalore:  Actor Darshan has given the Kannada film industry some of its biggest hits - Kalasipalya and Kariya, for example. Last week, he was arrested after he pulled a gun on his wife, Vijayalakshmi, who has accused him of torture which included beating her with a slipper and burning her with cigarette stubs.

She was seen heading into hospital today to meet Darshan, who is reportedly being treated for jaundice and asthma in Bangalore.

And while that's being seen by some as a gesture of reconciliation, another woman finds herself out in the cold. Nikita Thukral, Darshan's co-star in films like Sangolli Rayanna, has been banned for three years by the Producers' Association in the state. The reason - her alleged affair with Darshan, which forced a rift in his marriage, according to the producers.

"Everyone is aware of her alleged role in creating problems for Vijayalakshmi. We do not want heroines who create problems between heroes and their wives," said Soorappa Babu, Secretary, Kannada Film Producers' Association.

Darshan is 34-years-old. The fact that alleged crimes of violence committed by him are being attributed to his reported mistress is ludicrous. When asked why they're not penalising Darshan, the producers said that the police case against him proves he's being dealt with.

"The decision taken against Nikita by the Producers' Association, I feel, is wrong. Husband and wife fought... but now they are together," reflects Sandesh Nagaraj, the former President of the Producers' Association. "Vijayalakshmi is staying in Darshan's house - everything is alright now. But because somebody has said something against Nikita, we can't take action," he said.

"I hope some sane elements wake up and keep the good name of the Kannada film industry alive. It looks very bad on the national scene also for the Kannada Industry to rally around the person who has violated rights and also punishing somebody who's totally outside the whole issue. Nikita, I think, being punished is really like rubbing salt on a wound," said Shakun, an activist who works for women's rights.
