Cabinet resolution sought to commute death sentence of Rajiv murder convicts

Karunanidhi urges State to give a new lease of life for the convicts
Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president M. Karunanidhi on Sunday urged the State Government to adopt a resolution in the Cabinet, recommending commutation of the death sentence awarded to Murugan, Santhan and Perarivalan, convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case.

Humanitarian grounds
“The State Government should not think that its role was over after the Assembly had adopted a resolution. It should approach the issue on humanitarian grounds and follow the precedents set by his party while in power. It should adopt a resolution in the Cabinet and forward the same to the Governor of the State to secure their release,” he said in a statement.
Mr. Karunanidhi said that the DMK Government had commuted the death sentences in the past and two persons who survived the gallows were Tamil nationalist Kaliaperuman and Thiyagu.
As writer and publisher, Mr. Thiyagu had now gained respectability in the society.
The AIADMK Government too should give a new lease of life to Murugan, Santhan and Perarivalan, he added.
