Men posing as cops rob elderly women

Mumbai:  In separate incidents, two elderly women were looted of gold ornaments worth Rs.4.80 lakh by six motorcycle-borne men posing as cops.

Mukta Kulkarni (65), a retired government employee, was standing at a bus stop in suburban Vile Parle on Thursday afternoon when three unidentified persons posing as policemen struck a conversation with her, police said on Friday.

The trio asked her to remove gold ornaments worth Rs. 2.30 lakh she wore citing safety reasons during the ongoing Ganesh festival, and put them in her bag, police said.

As she followed their advice, she was tricked by one of the three accused, who subsequently zoomed off with the valuables on a bike on the busy road, they said.

Another woman Sundara Mael (60) was looted in a similar fashion at Mahanth Chowk in Vile Parle, where three unidentified persons impersonating as policemen intercepted the woman and told her to put gold ornaments in bag.

After a while, one of the three engaged her in talks and fled with ornaments worth Rs. 2.50 lakh, police said.
