R.K. Narayan |
Mysore, Sept. 6 (PTI): A house R.K. Narayan had lived in was being demolished to make way for an apartment building in Mysore, but the city corporation stepped in today.
“We have stopped the demolition for the time being,” corporation commissioner K.S. Raykar said. By then, the ceiling had been partially demolished.
The house in Yadavagiri was built by the author in the early 1950s. Narayan, regarded as one of the greatest Indian novelists, lived here till he moved to Chennai in the 1990s because of ill health.
The joint director of the corporation’s town planning wing, Chowdegowda, visited the spot yesterday on Raykar’s orders and directed the contractor to stop demolition till further orders.
A group of writers who visited the house during a seminar held on his birth centenary in October 2006 had suggested it be converted to a museum, but nothing has come of the suggestion.
