Three youths on a motorbike snatched a gold chain from a woman in Salt Lake on Tuesday, a day after an elderly man was robbed in similar fashion in the township.
Calcutta Medical College and Hospital professor Prabha Banerjee, 60, a resident of FE block, was headed home in a cycle rickshaw when three youths riding a motorcycle came from behind and snatched the gold chain she was wearing before speeding away.
The incident happened near St John’s School, between the GD island and the Calcutta Heart Research Centre, around 6.50pm.
“I was headed home from the market when I felt a tug at my neck. Even before I could shout out, the goons, on a black motorcycle, zoomed past my rickshaw towards Nicco Park,” said Banerjee.
The doctor added that she was so shocked that she could not note down the registration number of the motorbike.
“One of the three youths, probably in his mid-20s, had snatched the chain. The gold locket fell on the ground, which I later collected,” said Banerjee. She said the chain would cost Rs 30,000.
A Salt Lake resident of four and a half years, Banerjee said the recent spate of crimes in the township has unsettled her.
“If the situation continues to be like this, I will move back to my old house at New Alipore. Unknown faces and people from other areas loiter inside Salt Lake regularly these days and the police can hardly be spotted,” she said.
On Monday afternoon, two youths on a motorcycle snatched a handbag containing Rs 10,000, a debit card and a phone from Ashok Kumar Dasgupta, a retired bank employee and a resident of Salt Lake BD 101, moments after he stepped out of a bank in the same block.
“We have started investigation and have alerted the nearby police stations. From the manner of operation, it seems that a particular gang may be involved in both incidents. We hope to nab the culprits soon,” said a senior police officer of the Bidhannagar sub-division.
