Supreme Court begins final hearing of 1993 Mumbai blasts case












New Delhi:  As the blast at the Delhi High Court happened around 10.15 am,  the Supreme Court began the final hearing at 10:30 am today in the 1993 Mumbai blasts case.

Former Solicitor General Gopal Subramaniam started the arguments for the CBI.

The blasts took place in Mumbai on March 12, 1993 leaving 257 killed and 713 injured and property worth Rs. 27 crore were lost.

123 accused were tried by the CBI - 100 of them were convicted and the rest acquitted by the TADA court in Mumbai.

11 of the blast accused were given the death sentence, while others were awarded sentences ranging from three years to life

Actor Sanjay Dutt was also convicted under the Arms Act and given a six-year jail term. He is currently on bail.

The CBI filed appeals against the acquittals in the Supreme Court while 59 accused filed appeals against their conviction.

The CBI counsel also gave a detailed briefing of the background of the case to the court today 

For the first time in the apex court the judges, court master, lawyers for the CBI and the accused were given were provided with computer screens to read the documents of the case. This has been done because of the voluminous documents that are involved in the case

After hearing for one hour the court adjourned the case to November 1, as the lawyers for the accused sought more time to prepare for the arguments.
