Suicide politics return to Andhra

NEW DELHI/HYDERABAD: Suicide politics returned on Thursday to set Telangana back on hair-trigger, TRS MLA T Harish Rao bashing up a minion of AP Bhavan who wouldn’t let his fellow MLAs parade the body of a Telangana martyr at the state facility in Delhi.

A young man from Ranga Reddy district, M Yadhi Reddy, had hanged himself from a tree at India Gate on Wednesday. In his pocket was a suicide note expressing despondence over the delay in granting statehood to Telangana. TRS MLAs landed up at AP Bhavan on Thursday to turn the death into a political spectacle on a day when Congress Telangana MLAs were due to meet their high command to press their case for division of AP. The Andhra Pradesh resident commissioner Rajat Bhargav would not allow the body to be brought to AP Bhavan. Incensed by this, Harish Rao squeezed himself in through a gap in the gate, cornered an official on special duty, Chander Rao, and engaged in an argument. Then, he let go, with his left and right, slapping the official into submission. Others in the flock ransacked furniture in AP Bhavan. Sources said TRS MLAs were incensed that Yadhi Reddy’s body was spirited away from the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital -- in a political maneouvre by Congressmen -- to the airport and flown back home to Hyderabad, thereby denying the TRS an opportunity to make a show of it.
TRS MLA K T Ramarao said, “Who is he (Chander Rao) to decide? The family of the youth will decide where to take it and where not to.’’ All this built up tension at the Shamshabad airport where the police prevented even the media from snapping pictures of the body which was promptly shifted to the young man’s village of Pedmangalaram in Moinabad mandal.
Compared to all, the meeting T Congress public reps had with Azad was rather tepid. They met for more than two hours and received no assurance.
