Supreme Court to examine report on Modi's role in riots

Ahmedabad:  Will Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi be indicted in the 2002 Gujarat riots? A Supreme Court bench will hear the independent report of amicus curiae Raju Ramachandran in the case today.

The court had asked Mr Ramanchandran to analyse, examine and go beyond the report submitted by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) and submit his independent assessment of the evidence that has come on record.

On a two-day visit to Gujarat, Mr Ramachandran met several witnesses, including IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt, who had filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court stating that he had been present at the meeting convened by Mr Modi on February 27, 2002, where, he claimed, instructions were given "to teach minorities a lesson".

The SIT's investigation acts on a complaint by Zakia Jafri, who has alleged that Modi and 62 others were responsible for orchestrating the 2002 riots. The riots that followed the Godhra train burning incident, claimed 1,200 lives - among them ex-Congress MP Ehsaan Jafri, complainant Zakia's husband.

The SIT had questioned Mr Modi on his role during the riots in March 2010 and filed its report on May 15, 2010.
