Lokpal Bill ready; set to be placed before Cabinet next week

New Delhi, July 22 (ANI): After months of intensive scrutiny and meetings, the much-awaited Lokpal Bill is set to be tabled before the cabinet next week, Minister of State of Parliamentary Affairs V. Narayanswamy said on Friday.
Addressing a news conference in New Delhi, Narayanswamy, along with Union Telecom Minister and member of the bill drafting committee, Kapil Sibal, said the legislation was 'ready' to be discussed by lawmakers.

"Now, the final shape of the Bill has come and it is, as the honourable Minister said, to be introduced and placed before the cabinet next week," said Narayanswamy.
Stressing that the Ombudsman Bill would be introduced in the parliament during the Monsoon Session, Narayanswamy maintained that there was political consensus over a broad part of the legislation, with most parties calling for its smooth passage.
"It will be placed in the parliament in the Monsoon Session of the Parliament. It will be referred to the standing committee as usual by the parliament. Thereafter, when we get the standing committee report, our government is committed that we would like to see that the Lokpal Bill is passed, with the support of all the political parties. We are also feeling that the political parties, when we had the all-party meeting, here and there they had some reservations, they were also very serious that the Bill is to be passed," said Narayanswamy.
The government had appointed the joint drafting committee of the Lokpal Bill in April after anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare had gone on an indefinite hunger strike in New Delhi.
The Lokpal Bill is an anti-graft bill and is seen as a weapon to root out corruption from the government machinery.
Graft has long been a part of daily life, but a series of recent scandals - which include violations in granting telecom licences that cost the country 39 billion dollars in lost revenue-have triggered a fierce public and political outcry against an embarrassed government. (ANI)
