Make a fashion statement with tailored shorts

When to wear them: Stand out at formal events with tailored shorts, paired with a slim tie and a jacket. Meeting colleagues for dinner? Dress up with a smart shirt!

How to wear them:
"Experiment with layering on top to make the most of it," says Bengaluru-based fashion guru Prasad Bidapa. "Invest in a straight-cut, which looks narrow and can make even a stocky guy look good. And yes, your shoes are on display, so choose well."

Wear them with:
 1. Cardigans. 2. Formaljackets. 3. A messenger bag. 4. Loafers

Avoid:
Stuffing your pockets.

Adopt some attitude with linen shorts

When to wear them:
What you pair your linen shorts with should be based on where you're headed. "Linen shorts are versatile, and ideal for our temperate climate. You can wear them for Sunday brunch, a game of golf or a 'semi-formal' event like a Saturday-night outing with your girl's parents," says New Delhi-based celebrity stylist, Rishi Raj. "Try and pair them with casual cotton uppers."

How to wear them: Wear them slightly crushed, do not iron them. "Stick to neutral shades of brown and whites as linen is globally considered more formal than casual," says Raj. "Neutral tones can look polished, especially when paired with similar hues."

Wear them with:
1. Linen shirts. 2. V-neck T-shirts 3.Suspenders. 4. Leather sandals and thongs.

Avoid: Bright and colourful underwear.

Get into the holiday mood with floral shorts

When to wear them
: The beach, at home, a holiday, a barbecue party- anywhere but formal events!

How to wear them: "For the best fit, stick to drawstring shorts and avoid belts. You should be able to stick a few fingers in your waistband," says New Delhi-based celebrity stylist Divya Sharma. "Tall men should look for shorts with a longer hemline, while short men ones with a shorter hemline. Go for subtle prints and let the ladies experiment with bold ones."

Wear them with:
 1. Polo neck T-shirts 2. Jute hats and fedoras. 3. Canvas shoes or camel coloured sandals.

Avoid:
Clashing prints.

Get prepped for adventure with khaki shorts

When to wear them:
Khaki shorts were originally designed for the outdoors. They are tough, functional and give you a masculine look. Wear them for outdoor excursions like long drives, safaris and camping.

How to wear them:
Wear your khakis loose to allow free movement. Do not layer khaki with printed shirts or pop colours as they will soften the rugged look. Look for ones with many pockets to store outdoor essentials like a Swiss knife or a torch. Sturdy khakis last forever. Don't ditch your khakis when they start to wear. They take on character, like jeans do.

Wear them with: 1. Neutral T-shirts and military jackets. 2. A leather neck piece or bracelet. 3. Classic aviators 4. Leather boots.

Avoid: Long socks.

Get soaked to your skin in denim shorts

When to wear them:
Casual occasions. "When in doubt, pull out your denims. Wear them to a date, trip to the nearest mall, to a pool party or to the movies," says Gurgaon-based image consultant and stylist Payal Jaggi.

How to wear them: Don't wear them too low or too high. Your butt-crack shouldn't show. Experiment with different washes or treatment. For instance, acid wash is not for heavy thighs as they make them appear bigger. Keep your denims clean and simple. Like a good burger, shorts shouldn't try to be too fancy.

Wear them with:
Anything.

Avoid:
 Embellished denims!
